Net Zero Renovations & Deep-Energy Retrofits

NEAR NET ZERO ENERGY RETROFIT

Calgary, Alberta

This home in Acadia is very close to Net Zero. We modelled their home, upgraded their building envelope, installed an HRV. We also did an electrical service upgrade including Electric Vehicle plug. The following year we installed one heat pump for forced air heating, a Domestic Hot Water heat pump and solar panels.

Key Features

  • Air-change/hr cut in half.
  • R24 Insulation added to exterior.
  • Air-source heat pumps (for air and hot water heating)
  • Grid-tied solar array
  • Bidirectional ENMAX electrical meter

BUILDING ENVELOPE & EQUIPMENT

Calgary, Alberta

This home in Varsity added R24 to the exterior of the building along with triple-pane Lux Windows and an energy-efficient heat pump for hot water.

Key Features

  • Building envelope with R24 Insulation.
  • Air-source heat pumps
  • Triple-pane Lux Windows
  • Air-change/hr cut in half.

SECONDARY SUITE BASEMENT DEVELOPMENT

Calgary, Alberta

This basement in Panorama Hills was a complete renovation to legal secondary suite standards for a potential rental unit with 7" styrofoam added making it so efficient the entire unit could potentially be heated with a hair dryer. This home owner hopes to get to Net Zero eventually and has just taken the first step.

Key Features

  • Interior Renovation
  • 7" Foam insulation
  • Sanden CO2 heat pump supplying domestic hot water (DHW) for the entire building as well as radiant floor heating.
  • Sound attenuation between suite and main floor.

ATTACHED GARAGE RENOVATION

Calgary, Alberta

This project in Chinook was done to isolate the attached garage from the home for comfort. The walls between the attached garage and the room above were spray-foamed and air sealed to prevent cold air from leaking into the rooms above and adjacent to the garage. Once we modelled this property we realized a large portion of the heat loss in the home was from the attached garage, making it one of the first steps in transforming the home to Net Zero standards.

Key Features

  • Spray Foam & Air-Sealed walls / ceiling

NET ZERO ENERGY RETROFIT

Calgary, Alberta

Solar Homes Inc.'s first project was the renovation of founder Peter Darlington's mid-1980s built single-family home. Net Zero energy status was reached by installing proper insulation, high-performing windows, energy efficient mechanical equipment and appliances, as well as a solar array on top of Peter's new garage.

Key Features

  • Air tightness rating of 1.5 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals (ACH50)
  • Triple-glazed windows
  • Air-source heat pumps (for air and hot water heating)
  • Heat recovery ventilation
  • 15.4 kW grid-tied solar array
  • Bidirectional ENMAX electrical meter

MODULAR RESIDENTIAL BUILDING ON AGRICULTURAL PROPERTY

Water Valley, Alberta

This project involved the construction of a modular home on an agricultural property. It includes a solar array used to power the home heating system and power outlets, as well as the outlets in the nearby workshop (already in place). The home's heating was provided by a geothermal system with combination forced air and radiant heat.

Key Features

  • Seasonally adjustable 20 kW solar array
  • Ground loop geothermal system
  • Staggered stud wall construction
