Heating & Cooling
Heat Pump
Efficient electric heating and cooling — designed to work with your existing home, not against it.
Why it matters
Rated to -30 °C — With Backup
Modern cold-climate heat pumps handle the vast majority of Calgary heating hours efficiently. Because Calgary winters can push beyond any heat pump's economic range, every installation includes a backup heat source — gas or electric — sized to your home's actual heat load.
3× More Efficient Than Gas
Heat pumps move heat rather than create it, delivering 2.5–4 units of heat energy per unit of electricity consumed. That efficiency gap is money back in your pocket every month — even when the backup occasionally kicks in.
Heating and Cooling in One System
A heat pump replaces your central air conditioner and handles most of your heating load. In many homes with a high-efficiency furnace, we add the heat pump alongside it — giving you the best of both systems without replacing what's already working.
How Installation Works
Heat Load Calculation
We perform a Manual J heat-loss calculation to understand your home's true heating demand — this determines whether your existing furnace stays as backup or whether an electric backup is the right fit.
System Design
We design a dual-fuel or all-electric configuration based on your existing equipment, ductwork, and heat load. High-efficiency furnaces are often retained as the backup — saving you the cost of replacing them.
Installation
A certified HVAC crew installs the outdoor heat pump unit, connects it to your existing air handler or ductwork, and integrates the backup heat source with a smart thermostat that manages the switchover automatically.
Commissioning & Handoff
We commission the full system, verify backup staging is working correctly, and walk you through how the thermostat manages both heat sources — so you always know what's running and why.
What's Included
- Cold-climate heat pump outdoor unit (rated to -30 °C)
- Connection to existing ductwork and air handler (or new ductless heads)
- Backup heat integration — gas furnace retained where appropriate, or electric backup sized to heat load
- Refrigerant line set, electrical disconnect, and wiring
- Smart thermostat with automatic backup staging
- All permits and inspections
- 5-year parts and labour warranty
- Annual maintenance check in year one
Investment Range
$10,000 – $30,000 installed
Installed price including heat pump, backup heat integration, and commissioning. Range reflects home size, existing equipment condition, and whether a new backup heat source is required. Written quote provided after heat load assessment.
Typical Alberta Annual Savings
$800 – $2,000 per year
Compared to running a gas furnace for all heating. The heat pump handles the majority of heating hours at a fraction of the cost — the backup only runs during the coldest periods. Pair with rooftop solar and your heating electricity cost drops toward zero.
